Rough Collie Critiques - Show 1

London and Provincial Collie Club Show 1 on the 16th august 2026

Rough Collies

It was a real privilege to be invited to L&P to judge. I was delighted with my entry in both breeds and really grateful for how many made it along knowing it was going to be another very warm day of English summer weather. The show was fantastic, such a well thought out show focussed on exhibitor experience by a very attentive committee. What a great job you all do. Thank you to my ring stewards yesterday, in particular Thea and also thanks to everyone for having such a supportive and sporting manner inside and outside of the ring.

General remarks: I was pleased to get the opportunity to go over many dogs who were completely unknown to me. And some who I judged as puppies now more mature.

Overall in both breeds I always find teeth could be better taken care of. They have to last your dogs a lifetime please keep them clean.

On the whole most were of a really happy disposition with only a couple who were a little unsure of  themselves. Tails were acceptable in length but only a couple  went past the hock joint. Cow hocks weren’t an issue but several exhibits could do with strengthening up their rear with more exercise.

Class 1 Baby Puppy d/b no entries

Class 2 Veteran Dog 3 entries 1 absent

1st and best Veteran dog: Flowers Androma Dreamcatcher at Serenlas (imp svn). Very shapely almost 8 year old shaded sable and white dog, gleaming coat and sporting a lovely white collar. I loved this boys shape and size. Well balanced. He is very elegant yet masculine in profile and of very good temperament. Balanced in head with clean cheeks, parallel planes and a flat skull he had a well placed melting brown eye giving such a nice expression. Ear set good just tipped a little heavier than my preference. He flowed beautifully from head to tail down a well arched neck, excellent length of body and sweeping over his loin and down his croup. Well enough bodied but could have more breadth to his chest and ribbing. Excellent front and back quarters allowing his front reach to be lengthened and easy and good drive from behind, keeping parallel.

2nd Allsopps Aqualita it’s a Miracle shcex. Only just turned 7 and one I have judged twice previously this boy is still infantastic condition, much I have said before is still true. He just lost out on overall shape due to neck length and 1 having a little more front reach. He is very masculine and of a good size. Nice wedge shaped head and well placed eyes , correct in shape and size for a pleasing expression. Such a well made body, good strong bone in his legs, shoulder is well laid and well sprung rubs with firm strong back and loin which was held on the move and strong. He powers around the ring.

Class 3 Minor Puppy Dog 1 entered

1st Blakes Corydon The Visionary. The first puppy of the day was an absolute delight, one of 3 siblings here and  I really liked them all.

8 month old golden sable and white , lovely puppy coat. A shapely young male and well put together. Lovely dark eye. Head is balanced, skull nice and flat, ears a tad heavy at present but still only a baby, however they are well placed. Excellent jaw and muzzle. Nice  length to his neck , I felt overall he was very good in body for his age. I must say each of these puppies from this kennel have excellent substance in their bones giving super strong supportive legs. Good shoulder lay and well angulated in the rear. Moved well in all directions just typical of age in front and back just now, tracking in well with straight legs and a good reach but not quite obtaining single tracking , hocks were parallel just a bit more strength is required for more power in the rear.

Class 4 Puppy Dog 3 entered

Blakes Corydon World Vision .Class winner and best puppy dog was litter mate to the minor puppy. The litter brothers are very similar. Best puppy dog was a tough decision with me preferring the very slight difference in depth of skull, ear tip of this class winner being the better of the 2  and he had a super sweet expression. Similar remarks apply here to his brother. I felt he was coming together nicely for his age, clean in the head and moving well in all directions.

I was splitting hairs for best puppy in breed, in the end that came down to overall shape, eye set and depth of skull of the female.

2nd Coopers Kelekona Hearts Of Fire. Tri male of 11 months, shapely well sized male. Gleaming black coat with a nice white collar. Wedge shaped head but currently slightly longer in foreface, his eye is well placed and correct shape, lovely dark colour and expression. Ears could be a touch higher. The forequarters and hind quarters are correct with a great bend of stifle, but he is just a bit narrow in body right now and needing to develop in fore chest, gain more spring of rib and drop in brisket. Moving a tad loose coming and going. This should improve with maturity and strength.

3rd Durrant and Radford-house Fivejays Sparkle Crackle

Class 5 Junior Dog

1st Flowers Serenlas Catching Stars. 18 month old tri male. I found his head to be very pleasing particularly his eye and melting expression which won me over. Head is balanced , eyes are correctly shaped and placed and his ears are also well placed to create his lovely expression. Good length to neck and overall he was well angulated front and back.  Adequate in bone. Needs time to develop in body as with the puppy dog he is needing to develop in fore chest, gain more spring of rib and drop in brisket. Moving towards he is a tad loose and going away a touch close, he won this class on retention of topline.

2nd Thornes Chelborn Look at Me. A really attractive blue merle dog of lovely colour who is 14 months old. Masculine and well sized. Lovely correct wedge shaped head, nice flat back skull and very well used ears although a touch light. Lovely eye and expression on this boy. Made of good bone and standing on strong legs he is just another male of this age range where his body needs to catch up and fill out. Longer coupled than 1, he is losing his topline on the move.  Well angulated and good shoulder lay, just moving loosely at the moment and needing to build some strength. It was a tough decision between these boys as both lovely boys and I look forward to seeing how they mature.

Class 6 Post Grad Dog 2 entered 1 absent

1st Gatts Imaginist Superior Sun with Bearven. A striking almost 3 year old sable and white dog , full of life and loving the fuss of being gone over. He is a challenge for his owner hopefully he settles down more as he matures. He has a lovely dark oblique eye and alert expression giving away his character and a nice well blunted wedge shaped head, a little deeper in skull than preferred, excellent strong jaw and teeth, clean cheeks. Ears well used and tip correctly. Needing to develop a bit more in fore chest but overall body is well made, legs strong and well boned, good muscle.  Nice length of body with good angulation and slope of croup. I would slow him down a little moving, he has strong hind quarters but moved so quickly he runs close behind and because he is lifting his head driving forward his length of reach is restricted somewhat.

Class 7 Limit Dog 5 entered

A nice class of males with quality and individually all having lots of positive attributes

1st, Best dog, best of breed and also best In show! Randalls Ladnar Call My Name JW.

A really outstanding blue merle who has just turned 2 years old. Like his predecessors from this kennel he was a fantastic shape and elegance with sweeping lines head to toe, something I admire greatly from this kennel. He is a very laid back boy. My only criticism of him is he could use his ears more to his advantage but he is just so calm and doing his job with patience. Previously my BPIB 18 months ago I was pleased to have him entered under me again. He is a lovely colour. Excelling in this class in shape, movement and head properties. He was bob over the female ultimately due to his eye catching , elegant shape. He presents such a picture in profile, so well balanced throughout his entire body. Masculine in head, pleasing wedge shape and balanced with a very well filled foreface, parallel head planes and well placed stop. Good length and arch of neck helping create a beautiful outline. Strong straight legs with fabulous bone and the most wonderfully arched feet, I found him well bodied with a good depth of chest and filling in the forecast. Correct shoulder lay , length of back and strong in loin and a balanced , well angulated rear to complete the picture. Very effortless moving in all directions, perfect footfall in side profile, great front reach and strong parallel hocks driving away. Stands strong and well supported.

2nd Hansons Jards Ring Presence. Now almost 6 years old sable male ,one I have judged before and feel maturity is doing great things for him and he works so much better for his hander now too. I really liked his shape and he is a great sized male. Very masculine , he has a nice length of head which is  wedge shape, excellent muzzle and strong jaw and teeth. Ears well placed and used along with A nice dark eye creating desired expression. Strongly made body, muscular and good substance to his legs, shoulder well laid back and good bend of stifle, strong hocks. Moved easy with strength and purpose.

3rd Skinners Ladnar Makeithappen for nikal

Class 8 Open Dog 2 entered 1 absent

1st and RBD. Coopers Kelekona Hearts of Gold JW. One I have given BPIB before and he made my decision making for best dog a tough one. Another super shapely elegant yet masculine male and a glorious shaded sable, nicely complimented by a lovely white collar.  Just turned 4 years old and not at the peak of maturity I know there is much more to come for this dog. Excellent wedge shape, flat skull and parallel planes with a lovely eye and ear set to provide a gorgeous expression. Crested nape of neck into well laid shoulders, strong straight legs well boned. Ideal length of body, firm and strong in loin and well ribbed, correct angulation in rear and strong hocks with a very good turn of stifle allowed fantastic movement coming and going. In the challenge I felt limit dog single tracked better.

Class 10 Veteran Bitch 2 entered 1 absent

1st , best veteran in breed and reserve best bitch. Lyalls Santalolys Sky Amidalas VW.  11 years old and with the looks and movement of a dog much younger and exuberant happy personality I couldn’t deny this girl her placings today. She is aging so well without coarseness. She does not look 11! She has such an alert and intelligent expression which won me over in the veteran challenge, very keen and responsive to her handler. She is the sweetest of girls. She has enough length of head and depth to be balanced, if being picky I would like a little more fill to fore face. Wedge shaped, well blunted and feminine. Ears were placed well, of good shape size and tip and used constantly along with a lovely  shaped and placed eye. Good mouth for her age also. Elegant and shapely in profile, Still standing on good bone and with strong patterns not showing any weakness. Body is of good proportions, well bodied with good lay of shoulder, rise over loin and well bent stifles with strong hocks. Her coat fitted her perfectly. Easy and effortless movement in all directions.

Class 1 Minor Puppy Bitch 3 entered 2 absent

1st , best puppy bitch and best puppy in breed then also best puppy in show. Allsopp and Moores Omordha Lunar Eclipse. Just 6 months old this sparkling jet black, well sized and shapely tri female has started her show career with a bang. Developing well in head and body and very well schooled she presents a lovely picture. I really liked her head properties and expression, very knowing and kind. Eyes are a lovely shape, set correctly and dark brown in colour. Ears are in the correct place and very well used, just needing to lighten slightly. She has a good length of neck ,well laid shoulder strong legs, good length of back just needing the body to develop but such a young baby still that will come in time. Well bent stifle and keeping parallel as she moved out, driving well for one so young and nice front reach.

Class 12 Puppy Bitch 6 entered 2 absent

1st Flowers Serenlas Shes on Trend, 10 month old sable in the middle of a wardrobe change but looking well for it as her coat is nicely fitted. A good sized girl with a lovely elegant outline. Having the edge of maturity over puppy 2, her movement gaining her the class. Overall a really nice girl, more mature than some at that age. Lovely eye and expression which is full of life. Fantastic wedge shaped head, correct planes and flat skull, ears well placed and well used. Body wise I wouldn’t like her any longer. She is strong in legs and in topline when she moves, moving well in all directions.

2nd Blakes Corydon Perfect Vision. Such a pretty and appealing golden sable and white puppy, a little bit looser moving than 1, not quite tracking in front yet otherwise so much to like with this youngster. Younger and a bit smaller than 1, she is sporting a Lovey puppy coat. Another shapely youngster as with her brothers her bone quality is excellent. Lovely eye shape , dark brown and full of intelligence. Feminine in head with a Balanced clean head, parallel planes and flat in skull I would not like the skull any deeper. Decent length of neck and body which is developing well and she has a good fore chest. Excellent feet. Overall a well made puppy, front and back correct in desired angulation. Moving with positivity. I look forward to seeing how she grows up.

3rd Fivejays Sparkle Sapphire

Class 13 Junior Bitch 3 entered 1 absent

Both girls in this class are at a similar stage of development and making their owners work hard

1st Hansons Jards Cudmirrah Special. 16 month old tricolour. Mid wardrobe change but jet black in colour. Lovely eye and expression. Head parallel , flat in back skull and of good shape but I found her to be a little bit deep in skull with slightly wider heavier ears. In body she needs to fill out in body and develop in fore chest and is a touch long in back. Overall moving well, good front reach and tracking well in front, behind coming in close.

2nd Ransomes Serenlas Dream Maker. Almost 18 month old sable and white, appealing girl in profile, although different breeding to 1 many remarks are similar in terms of body development and length. The girls just need to mature a bit. Very nice eye and expression, feminine head and well used ears. Moving well enough just coming in a bit wider and not tracking as well infront.

Class 14 Post Grad Bitch 9 entered 5 absent

A very mixed class each having their own merits and positive qualities

1st Gatts Wicani Belladonna for Bearven. Almost 2 years old, this tricolour is a lovely shape ,well sized, gleaming jet black with a white collar and full of charisma. She is well built and moves to prove it. Movement won this class for her. Nice muzzle and well blunted, head a little wider and deeper than preferred subsequently also wider set ears , I would prefer were lighter tipped. That said she is still an attractive girl ,she looks strong , she feels strong and she moves strong, full of power and purpose. Great topline held together by a strong and supportive loin. Very good angulation front and back. Great reach in side profile. I would trim her hocks more to present her true construction.

2nd Radford-House and Durants  Didek Moon River Through Fivejays. 3 and and a half year old female with a lot to like about her. Smaller made than 1 she doesn’t show herself off well, not a keen showman however when she moves she gets on with the job and moves very well indicating she is constructed well. Shapely with excellent head planes and a lovely eye and expression, good ears which she does use. Although smaller made her length to height was spot on. Well made front , decent body and excellent bend of stifle and well let down hocks meant she glided around the ring in a very collected manner.

3rd Barnesmores Aqualita Magical Winter

Class 15 Limit Bitch 3 entered 1 absent

These 2 girls were polar opposites and I really liked both of them for different reasons

1st Wensley, Wensley and Lusty Blamorder Any Dream Will Do. 4 year old merle. Won this class on movement and was cleaner in head but not the femininity I like to see in a rough collie, which is where the second exhibit really drew me in. That being said she is a very well made bitch all over , I would not like her to be any longer in body. Super constructed she moved very well, purposeful and true.

2nd Radford-House and Durrants Kiss Me Kate Di Cambiano at Fivejays (imp ita). 3 and a half year old sable and white female, and one ive admired before ringside. Much smaller made than 1 but well balanced throughout, A really pretty and attractive girl, appealing head shape but rather loose In the flews. Ears well used. Moved well coming forward but not maintaining parallel hocks going , couldn’t match the power of 1.

Class 16 Open Bitch 1 entry

1st, best bitch and rbob Llewellyn’s Starlenga Nina Simone. 5 year old blue merle who is quality head to tail. When I walked towards her I actually couldn’t believe my eyes as I took in her head and expression. A lovely blue colour marbled with black, in full coat and shapely and of good size. One that needs gone over to appreciate whats under her coat as she has profuse coat around her neck and a very good neck underneath. I liked everything about her, beautiful eye shape , set and colour along with ears well placed and correctly tippedgiving the most melting expression. Lovely feminine wedge shaped head, blunted and well rounded at the muzzle, clean through cheeks. Everything was correct in her construction, ideal length to height. When I asked her to move I was silently praying she could move well and I was delighted to see her go. Everything looked so effortless as she covered the ground.

Smooth Collies

It was a real privilege to be invited to L&P to judge. I was delighted with my entry in both breeds and really grateful for how many made it along knowing it was going to be another very warm day of English summer weather. The show was fantastic, such a well thought out show focussed on exhibitor experience by a very attentive committee. What a great job you all do. Thank you to my ring stewards yesterday, in particular Thea and also thanks to everyone for having such a supportive and sporting manner inside and outside of the ring.

Overall in both breeds I always find teeth could be better taken care of. They have to last your dogs a lifetime please keep them clean.

With regards to Smooth Collies I am very pleased to say first and foremost on the whole temperament was excellent. I found most exhibits to have good substance, in the past I have found smooths to appear a bit to fine. One thing I did observe was a noticeable trend of shorter than ideal tails creeping in. I also noted several exhibits had lighter eyes instead of the required dark brown the standard calls for, a few lacking the almond shape. That being said I was delighted with all the dogs presented to me and I was presented with a few challenging decisions. In several cases dogs could have switched places very easily, particularly in the dog and bitch challenges.

Class 17 Baby Puppy d/b 1 entry

A delightful baby to kick the smooth classes off. Only 4 months old and enjoying the experience which is so important at that age. Feminine blue merle , wonderful happy temperament. Head is good for age, nicely placed and shaped eye. Ears very mobile but carried and placed well. Lovely arch to her neck. Excellent substance , already showing promise in construction and moved well. Wonderful baby.

Class 18 Veteran Dog 2 entries

1st BVD, BVIB. Smiths Ch / Multi Ch Winter is Coming to Tentola. 10 years old and still such a quality male. He is aging well. It was nice to see him in the final line up alongside his son whom he has passed on so many virtues and now has to give way to. Having judged him before I still find this dog so appealing in outline, you can see how well made he is front, body and rear, he won his class on both head properties and movement. He is aging without becoming coarse ,retaining bone, body and muscle and his eyes still super expressive and full of life. On the move he Is still holding himself very well. He starts off a little wide but finds his footfall once he gets going and still moves well in all directions.

2nd Dentons Rylance Moonshine Over Brackenhaye. 2 years younger than 1, another blue merle but did not match 1 for shape, neck length and loses his parallel hocks on the move. Head planes not as parallel as 1. Good wedge shaped , well filled head otherwise presenting a pleasing picture. Nice expression. Retaining body condition and good angulation front and back.

Class 19 Special Yearling Dog 4 entries 1 absent

1st , BD and RBOB. Dentons Coldelee Take it to the Limit, very attractive almost 18 month old sable and white male. I was quite taken by this dog. He is masculine but not over done. He scored on head properties. Well balanced, well filled and correctly placed almond shaped eyes, his expression set off by his well placed and well tipped ears. This boy is bright and alert. I found him to be shapely , with a nicely arched neck, well made in front and rear with a good body on him, strong and supportive in the loin retaining a good firm top line. Harsh fitting coat. He moved very well , retaining strong parallel hocks driving away and with good forward reach. He made for a lovely side profile on the move. Just edged his way to BD on the move.

2nd Gills Blamorder Starman. 18 month old sable and white dog. A nice male, shorter headed than 1. He has a nice dark eye and alert look about him, body had just enough length , decent in front and legs made of good bone. I would prefer more bend of stifle. Still needs time to strengthen and tidy up his movement a bit.

3rd Youngs Wylene Ace of Spades

Class 20 Limit dog 1 entry

1st Metcalfs Koczkodan Well I Never. 3 year old tri, gleaming jet black coat. Dog of good size and presented a nice balanced outline. Good head properties although I found his eye to be a touch small his expression was full of alertness. His flews were a little loose for my preference. Good length and arch to his neck, body was good and he moved soundly.

Class 21 Open Dog 3 entries1 absent

1st , RBD. Howard and Forts Shulune Imperial Inkheart with Casatentola. Almost 3 year old, uber masculine merle won his class on profile standing and moving and having overall better and more collected movement. He is a lovely colour of blue. I think with this dog the best is yet to come. His head is of a good length, parallel head plane with a good flat skull, well used and tipped ears and a really nicely set kind intelligent eyes. His shoulder is well laid back, legs of good bone and very strong. Well bodied for age with good depth of chest and ribbing and a strong supportive loin allowing his to retain good topline on the move. He has a good front reach, movement around in all directions is free and is easy and effortless. He is a dog that need a good size of ring and takes a second to get his correct rear foot placement , moving with strong parallel hocks.

2nd Seagers Blamorder Magic Maker with Freejack. Almost 4 years old,a masculine sable boy. Excellent for size with both a nice head and appealing, elegant shapely body. I would not like any more depth to his head. Nice dark eye and lovely expression. Body is well made, good depth of rib , well laid back shoulders and adequate bend of stifle. He has a tendency to pin in his right front leg when standing and on the move he was going past the straight line of single tracking and crossing over on occasion.

Class 22 Champion Dog 1 entered 1 absent

Class 23 Veteran Bitch 5 entered 1 absent

1st , BVB. Bentons Ch Oakestelle Artemis ShCEx VW. A lovely merle lady of 9 years old, super feminine in head and overall shape, body proportions are excellent. excellent wedge shaped head, clean and not coarse with a lovely shaped and well placed eye giving a soft expression. Ears are on the lighter side but forgivable as that’s her only head fault, she is very refined. Retaining substance her legs are made of good bone and muscle, ideal length and condition in body. Excellent front and rear angulation and strong hocks making movement around the ring so effortless. Tough call for BVIB, the dog just having the edge on the move and ears that tipped a little more.

2nd Dentons Ch Brackenhaye Shape O’My Heart. 10.5 year old tri colour, feminine , elegant and really appealing, couldn’t match 1 in movement today. She has a lovely expression coming from nicely shaped, sized and placed eyes. Wedge shaped head, skull fat. Ears were set on well and tipped nicely. Lovely arch of neck, strong forequarters and of good body condition for her age, couldn’t match the bend of stifle of class winner. She moved well for the most part.

3rd Cowlings Koczkodan Serenity VW

Class 24 Special Yearling Bitch 4 entered

A tough decision between 1 and 2 in this class.

1st , RBB. Wensleys Blamoder Starstruck by Versatilis. I found this young lady so appealing. 18 months old, super feminine and elegant from head to tail. I preferred her eye to 2, just being a little bit more open. Nice expression, gentle and kind. I liked her pigmentation on her lips and eye rims, excellent wedge shaped clean head, smooth in cheeks. Lovely fill to muzzle. Standing on strong legs of excellent bone she looks very balanced in profile and works hard to present herself well. Still a little maturing to do in body and I wouldn’t like any more length. Excellent angulation in the rear, well let down strong hocks allowed her to power around the ring easily. Good reach and tracking in front. Lovely harsh coat

2nd Jerretts Coldelee Busy Bein Fabulous, aptly named I was splitting hairs between 1 and 2. Really lovely pair of sable girls with little between them in my decision making except eye. This girl is very like her mum. Sweet and feminine sable of 17 months old had everything in the right place and is maturing well. Slightly shorter in head than 1 but well balanced and filled. Her entire profile is one of balance. Well laid back shoulders, Good strong legs, made of good bone, ideal angulation in the rear with a good bend of stifle made for very efficient easy movement.

3rd Russells Koczkodan In My Heart

4th – the puppy of the class. BPIB. Llewellyn and Lustys Blamorder Sunny Side UP. 10 month old tri puppy of excellent temperament. Nice dark well placed and shaped eye. Head currently a little lean, ears are playing havoc with her currently, overall I found her to be shapely, developing well in front , body and rear for age and made of good bone although a little narrow through body at the moment, moving well for a puppy just coming in a little close at the moment.

Class 25 Limit Bitch 1 entered 1 absent

Class 26 Open Bitch 2 entered 1 absent

1st Jerretts Ch Coldelee Eternal Sunshine. A lovely 4 year old sable girl and worthy champion, I have a soft spot for this girl and I was extremely troubled finalising my best bitch and reserve best bitch. So elegant and feminine, well balanced and with a lovely outline. I don’t have anything negative to say. Lovely wedge shaped head which is balanced, eyes are nicely shaped and set giving such a sweet expression. Nice ears well placed and tipped. Just enough substance throughout her bone I wouldn’t like to see her any finer. She has a very good front and rear, and has bodied up well since I judged her as a puppy a few years ago. Its been most pleasing to see her grow up and do so well for herself.

Class 27 Champion Bitch 1 entered

1st , BB and BOB. Bentons Ch Blamorder Double Or Quits of Oakestelle JW. 2 year old, feminine and quality blue merle presents a wonderfully balanced picture from head to tail. Her coat is a lovely blue colour, and I love her facial markings of blue and tan, she is a very pretty girl and another worth her title but a long road of fun ahead as she is so young. Very classically wedge shaped in head, feminine and well balanced with clean cheeks and nice tight lip line. Ears sit on top nicely and are well used to her advantage to enhance her expression. She stands proud on good bone, straight strong legs correctly laid back at the shoulder and body of good length to height ratio, I wouldn’t like her any longer. She is still not finished maturing in body. She has a really lovely rise over loin and sweep of croup, good bend of stifle and short strong hocks, moving well coming and going and looking exceptional in side profile. She stood out more to me in the challenge
